中国科学院大学留学生代表Robert Shea Duerler在2019级新生开学典礼上发言

2019年8月31日上午,中国科学院大学(简称“国科大”)在雁栖湖校区隆重举行2019级新生开学典礼。

Distinguished President Bai, dear teachers and my fellow students: 早上好!

I am very honored to be here today. My name is Robert Duerler, a Master's student from Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) as well as a new international student of UCAS. I come from Las Vegas in the United States. I am still working on my Chinese, but feel free to say 你好 if you see me walking around. Or if you know Japanese or German, maybe we can have a conversation sometime. When I first came here, the first thing I noticed is how big this campus is. It's almost twice as big as my university in Las Vegas. The air is very fresh, and it is not as hot as Las Vegas. I am looking forward to studying with everyone here. I hope the knowledge we share and the friendships we build across cultural and national boundaries will promote new scientific exchange between our countries.

During my undergraduate study, I focused on researching China's “the Belt & Road”. For my Master's study, I am continuing to focus on “the Belt & Road”. My research proposal is to use remote sensing to view the changes over time and space in areas affected by “the Belt & Road”. Lastly, I realize that the relationship between my country and China is not very good at the moment. However, I hope that will change in the future. Professor Cao Chunxiang showed me the research our institute is working on and how it can benefit everyone around the world. Therefore, I would like to continue researching so that both countries and everyone else can see those same benefits.

Thank you. 谢谢大家!
